Improve the Feng Shui of Your Hotel With These 5 Tips

This ancient art can improve the guest experience through satisfying visuals.

The ancient Chinese art of Feng Shui isn’t rooted in modern psychology, but it is a practical tool that can be integrated into hotel design to create a harmonious and welcoming environment.

Feng Shui, translated as “wind-water,” is an ancient Chinese practice that aims to harmonize individuals with their surroundings. It’s rooted in the belief that the arrangement of objects and spaces can affect the flow of energy (chi or Qi) in a way that encourages balance, health, and prosperity. Although often applied to more spiritual beliefs, the principles of feng shui have been successfully applied in various modern contexts, including interior design.

There’s no scientific evidence for chi or how organizing around it affects people, however, research from experts in the psychology of aesthetics does suggest that changes in interior design and architecture have an effect on mood and perception of a space just as feng shui does. To many, the design rules of feng shui are often considered visually appealing. It enhances the visuals of one’s space. It keeps it from feeling crowded and creates a more balanced feel – leading to a more serene stay for your guests.

Here are a few rules and suggestions from feng shui to bring your space into balance.

A welcoming entrance

A hotel’s entrance is its initial impression, setting the tone for the entire stay. By ensuring it’s well-lit and clutter-free energy flows freely. Ensure that the pathway to the entrance is clear and unobstructed. A spacious and clutter-free entrance invites guests in and brings their eyes to spaces that have more detail. Make sure any landscaping leading up the the entrance is balanced and cared for.

Decor

Artwork and decor choices in the lobby should feature symbols of good luck and prosperity. By selecting pieces with positive themes and avoiding those that evoke negativity, you can create an aesthetically pleasing environment. Images of flowing water are one way to present positive imagery, as are florals and images of animals. Anything that shows nature and fosters joy is a positive addition to the space.

Positive energy through furniture

Embracing feng shui in the lobby involves thoughtful furniture arrangement. Gentle curves and avoiding sharp angles contribute to an inviting atmosphere. Incorporating water features, like fountains, brings a sense of positive energy, transforming the lobby into a peaceful space for guests to unwind after traveling or spending a long day exploring the area.

Natural elements

Integrating natural elements like plants connects the indoor space with nature, creating a sense of tranquility. The use of natural materials, such as wooden accents or stone finishes, not only creates an earthy aesthetic but also aligns with feng shui principles, leading to a sense of stability.

Lighting

Lighting plays a crucial role in Feng Shui, setting the mood in a space. In your lobby, the lighting should aim for a balance between natural and artificial light. Maximizing natural light contributes to a positive and uplifting atmosphere. Artificial lighting, on the other hand, should be soft and welcoming, avoiding harsh or overly bright fixtures. Feng shui also suggests layered lighting to create depth and dimension in a space. Incorporate a combination of ambient and task lighting to cater to different needs and activities. You’d want more of ambient lighting for seating areas, but perhaps task lighting for desk areas.
