Master Mother’s Day by Revamping 9 Traditional Celebrations

There are plenty of sweet, wholesome ways to celebrate Mom on Mother’s Day. But mothers are not solely parents – they’re people, too. And they probably wouldn’t mind a bit of excitement over the usual crafting, picnic, or paint class.

The meals and social activities usually associated with Mother’s day are all too familiar. It’s time for this holiday to evolve beyond brunch.

If you look at it from the guest perspective, it’s easy to think outside the box. Mothers spend a good chunk of their lives organizing family-friendly activities: From attending out-of-tune school recitals to making endless meals and crafting the ultimate holiday gifts, mothers have seen all the family-style fun there is. There’s a need to offer something more exciting for those that want to celebrate differently.

Maybe it’s time these queens of adulting are treated to some adult-style fun.

Bring in new business with a unique Mother’s Day promotion that allows moms to let their hair down and forget about being a mom for a few hours. Not sure where to begin? Get creative with what’s already tried and true.

Here’s a spin on the classic Mother’s Day itinerary that restaurants, bars, entertainment venues and more can draw inspiration from to turn Mother’s Day on its head.

1.   Brunch

Brunch is the go-to when it comes to taking Mom out. But do endless eggs equal a good time? Not always. Add a twist to this ordinary outing by adding a tasty mom-themed cocktail to the menu (or free introductory shots for the guests of honor). A DJ or eccentric host can keep things lively with prize giveaways, adult jokes, or a dance contest. Remember: What happens at brunch, stays at brunch.

2.   Picnics

Laying on the grass eating sandwiches is a peaceful activity. It can also be a snooze fest. Make the most of your outdoor area and lay out the ultimate spread with a make-your-own-sandwich feast, complete with drinks and live entertainment. It’s even more fun with an old school vibe: Take mothers back in time with park activities of yesterday and make mothers partake in fun relays – like three-legged races and scavenger hunts – so they can enjoy being a kid again, too.

3.   Cooking

Sometimes parents need a lesson or two in cooking, sometimes they don’t. But either way, Mother’s Day is not the time to teach Mom. Instead, entertain mothers with a wine tasting on the side while the adult children prepare them dinner in a cooking class. This time the tables are turned as moms get to sit back and critique their kids’ cooking – something they’ll surely enjoy.

4.   Beach day

Take advantage of waterfront property – or add island flair with tropical decorations and dishes. Transform interiors into an island resort and mothers will feel like they’re escaping into a relaxation zone. This can be achieved most effectively when paying attention to details and hiring authentic island-themed entertainment. Food trucks feature some of the best island fare you’ll find, and guests will feel like they’re on a sunny vacation no matter where they are.

5.   Afternoon tea

Another staple of Mother’s Day, afternoon tea can be nice. It can also turn into so much more with a specific theme in mind. For example, an Alice in Wonderland tea can serve up crazy cocktails instead of the traditional leaves. Whimsical, colorful cakes and costumed creatures making tableside visits add to the magic – and it can take an adult turn, especially when tea service is offered after dark.

6.   Shopping

Why let stores have all the fun? (And revenue?) Bring in local artisans and set up a special shopping experience for mothers. Sellers can offer special discounts, and wherever you’re hosting, keep the mimosas flowing. This event not only attracts guests, it forges relationships with the community and promotes small business in a wonderful way.

7.    Painting

Painting classes have become incredibly popular over the last few years, especially when it involves wine. Take the “paint-and-sip” concept a step further by trading in the vase full of flowers for an attractive male (or female) real-life model. Moms will have fun painting something easy on the eyes. Provide music, food, and plenty to sip during this creative adult-only endeavor.

8.   Game night

Toast mothers at the neighborhood bar or pub with a Mother’s Day trivia night. Curate questions specifically related to parenthood and women’s history. Make it a rewarding evening with free food on a return visit, ensuring guests will come back for more. If trivia seems too daunting to organize, consider bingo or other classic games with a late night twist involving music, madness, and mayhem.

9.   “Mentor’s” Day

For those that have had others step into the role of “Mom” and become the mentor they needed, it is truly a special experience. This alternative presents a unique opportunity to host and market an event that reaches a wider audience.

Create promotions that honor the people who have loved and guided children regardless of their familial relationship. Guests can bring in their mentors for special meal deals, live entertainment, and festivities that are built to celebrate the amazing relationship between themselves and their biggest support.

No matter which direction you take, get creative and kick the celebrations up a notch so guests can take their moms out for a Mother’s Day they’ll never forget.
