Best Practices and up to the minute news on Customer Experience Management and Service Excellence
An Airbnb concern that floats around most is often the use of indoor security cameras, which the platform officially banned outright in May 2024. While this is an immensely important safety concern, it exemplifies a theme: The most commonly discussed concerns regarding Airbnb center around the guest.
Guests are certainly top of mind with about 150 million users and 5.5 million hosts, who are clearly outnumbered, on the platform. Sure, that’s good for business, but issues and concerns hosts face can be eclipsed by their client base.
This is where Automatic Technology (ATA) is stepping up.
“The sheer scale of Airbnb’s global user base has amplified security risks,” ATA’s security experts say. “Hosts need to go beyond offering a clean and comfortable space – they need to implement effective security measures to protect their property and guests from potential threats… Security has become an absolute necessity for Airbnb hosts.”
So, where is a host even supposed to start? Here are some important steps ATA’s experts shared with Hospitality Excellence.
Get a smart lock that lets you create unique access codes for each guest you host. This means you don’t need to worry about exchanging a physical key and reduces the risk of someone unauthorized accessing your property.e
“[Smart locks] not only enhance security but provide convenience for both hosts and guests. Changing access codes between stays ensures no one can re-enter without permission,” ATA says.
Airbnb’s indoor camera ban doesn’t stop you from (and should encourage you further to) be fervent about your outdoor security and camera presence. Place cameras at every entrance, driveway, or outdoor space that don’t impede a guest’s right to privacy or break any other Airbnb guidelines.
VPNs exist for a reason – Wi-Fi can be a channel for bad actors. Ensure you have a secure Wi-Fi setup that protects your data and the guests’.
Use a separate network for guests completely separate from any devices or smart home systems you use personally.
“Many hosts overlook the importance of network security,” ATA says. “A compromised network can lead to data breaches, potentially affecting not just current guests but future bookings as well.”
Like your residence, rentable Airbnb spaces need smoke detectors, carbon monoxide alarms, and motion sensors. Take this a step further by putting those devices into a centralized system. This can ensure that you and your guests are promptly alerted to any danger.
This is both a safety and a business suggestion. Protecting your guests is one way to protect yourself.
Provide guests with detailed guides that include important local contact numbers, instructions for security device features they should have access to, and emergency exit plans.
“Clear communication about safety measures can significantly boost guest confidence,” ATA says. “It demonstrates professionalism and care, which often leads to better reviews and increased bookings.”
